First Aid Basics: What Every Non-Medic Should Have On-Hand

You don’t need a full fucking trauma kit to handle most minor injuries. Here’s what to keep in a basic first aid kit for the average person. like, seriously the basics of the basics.

Bandages and gauze

Use bandages for small cuts and scrapes, and gauze for larger wounds. Keep some adhesive tape to secure it.

You don’t need to go overboard and get all of those insane different sizes of bandages. Just a basic pack works fine for an emergency.

Antiseptic wipes and painkillers

Clean wounds with antiseptic wipes to prevent infection. Stock up on a ‘lil bottle of ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Tylenol)/paracetamol (Panadol) for pain relief.

First aid manual

When you’re stressed, it’s shockingly easy to forget what to do. A small first aid booklet or printout can walk you through the basics when you’re feeling frazzled. There’s a lot of options out there but if you’re in the US, this primer from the Red Cross may be a good go-to.
