Oh Shit, There’s a Wildfire: Urban & Suburban Edition

Wildfires aren’t just a “deep in the forest” problem anymore. If you’re seeing smoke, warnings, or that sky-is-on-fire lighting, it’s time to move past denial and into action.

Here’s what you need to know and do right now:

Pack a go bag with some extras

Ok so everyone should have an emergency kit or a go bag or whatever the fuck you want to call it. In this case, if you live in an area that may be more prone to be affected by wildfires, there are a few additional things you may wanna throw in there:

  • An N95 mask or two (to handle smoke)
  • Additional water (you don’t have to go crazy)

Remember, you don’t have to prep for this by buying a ton of stuff. You can make a lazy go-bag from stuff you already own. But for wildfires, deffo plan for smoke and issues around breathing/ventilation.

Prep your car like it’s your second home

If you have a car, try to tap up on a full tank of gas or charge up your EV. That’s the easiest thing to keep tabs on here, although it’s also easier said than done in any emergency.

However, one big thing you’ll want to do is make sure you map out at least two evacuation routes and stash extra water, masks, a blanket, and an emergency kit inside the car.

You’re not trying to cross a continent or anything – you’re just trying to get you and your family somewhere safer.

Harden your home (if there’s still time)

If you’re reading this before a wildfire has happened and there’s still some time to get your house in order, try to:

  • Shut the windows and doors tightly
  • Move flammable stuff (patio furniture, door mats) away from the house
  • If authorities recommend it and you have time, spray down vegetation close to your home with water

But listen: if evacuation is advised, leave. Don’t waste time trying to be a hero with a fuckin’ garden hose.

3 Takeaways

  1. Have a grab-and-go bag ready, packed, and reachable.
  2. Fuel your car and know at least two ways out.
  3. If told to evacuate, just do it. Your stuff isn’t worth your life.
